Composite and Colorsteel Slat Fencing
Best for: New builds, contemporary homes, low-maintenance properties
Composite and Colorsteel slat fencing has become extremely popular in Queenstown over the last few years, and for good reason. The powder-coated finish holds up well in our climate: the UV exposure, the frost, the occasional heavy snow. It does not require the ongoing maintenance that timber does.
Colour options have expanded considerably, and it is now easy to match to cladding or joinery to get a cohesive look. If you are building a new home or doing a significant renovation, this is worth serious consideration.
The downside is cost. Slat fencing is typically more expensive upfront than timber. But when you factor in that it will not need repainting or replacing for 20+ years, the lifetime cost is often lower.
Timber Paling Fencing
Best for: Classic residential boundaries, cost-sensitive projects
Timber paling is the traditional choice, and it still makes a lot of sense in many situations. It is more affordable upfront, easy to install, and can look excellent when done properly and maintained.
The key thing with timber is accepting that it needs ongoing maintenance: staining or painting every few years, and checking for rot or damage after harsh winters. If you are happy to do that, timber can serve you well for a long time. If you want something you can forget about, look at composite or aluminium instead.
Smart Wall Fencing
Best for: Privacy, outdoor living areas, contemporary properties
Smart Wall sets kiln-dried laminated timber palings into a black aluminium frame. It is one of the most requested fencing styles we install right now, particularly for side fences next to outdoor living areas.
The appeal is simple: you get the warmth of a timber fence with a crisp modern edge, and the aluminium frame plus a concealed steel reinforcing rail keeps the run straight instead of bowing the way a standard paling fence eventually does.
If your section backs onto a neighbour and you spend a lot of time outside, Smart Wall is worth considering seriously.
Macrocarpa Post and Rail
Best for: Subdivision boundaries, rural-residential properties, driveway entrances
Macrocarpa is the classic New Zealand rural fence, and it fits the Queenstown landscape better than almost anything else. The warm timber tones complement the mountain backdrop, and the natural durability of macrocarpa means it holds up without chemical treatment.
It is the most common choice we see in Queenstown subdivisions, including Parkridge, where the design covenants typically allow or specify post and rail fencing. If you are settling into a new subdivision section and need boundary fencing, macrocarpa is almost certainly on your shortlist.
Balustrades
Best for: Decks, balconies, stairs, anywhere with a view
If your property has a view, and in Queenstown most do, you want a balustrade that meets the Building Code without blocking half of what you paid for. We build powder-coated tubular steel and aluminium balustrades, which give you a slim profile and clean sightlines while staying compliant.
Anything above a metre generally needs a balustrade, and the posts and fixings are what determine whether it stays solid over time. It is not a job to cut corners on. Done properly it lasts decades with no maintenance beyond an occasional wash.
What to Think About Before You Call
